Outside the Lines
Lyrics by Jed Moffitt
Music by Jed Moffitt and Stan Snow

Vectors and trajectories. Intersecting lines. Funny how sometimes life is like a beautiful swim downriver to the sea. And sometimes it is like The Matrix! Outside the lines is written from the perspective of an innocent young salmon who had the best of intentions as he swam energetically down the Duwamish Waterway toward the Puget Sound and an open horizon full of possibility and a sense of the future. I actually observed this dream shattered in a split second as an Osprey dive-bombed him wickedly from the sky at about an 80-degree angle. There was a splash, and suddenly the future of the salmon had taken a turn for the worse, outside the lines of his best laid plans.

Pay attention to the cascading vertical changes of the bridge section where Stan takes an effortless sounding solo line through changes that are anything but effortless. And also note the sounds of the LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. Is it a digital representation? Or actually the LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA? Can your ear tell? Mike Stone’s drumming on this tune is worthy of a call out as our master of rock moves into the realm of more orchestral percussion. It’s a big tune after the fashion of the prog rock of the good old days. Genesis may be only a memory, but the Sundogs are playing it today baby.

I’ve been swimming upstream
Ever since I was a fingerling
Never think about the meaning
Of what it could be
Or the shadow flying over me

I’ve been fighting so long
And the current is strong
But it gets a little lonely

Natural selection keeps the lucky and the brave
Simple misadventure
One wrong turn, ride the wave

Looking for protection
No where to hide
Fortune intervenes
Takes me for a ride
Outside the Lines

Today is the first day
Everything has gone right
Don’t think about the monsters
Or the shadows that go bump in the night

The world is open
Full of possibility
But it gets a little lonely
Gets a little lonely

Chasing my reflection
Immersion in a lie
Lost in introspection
Raptor sees from the sky

Vectors and trajectories
Intersecting lines
Subtle indications
Disconcerting signs
Outside the lines

Natural selection keeps the lucky and the brave
Simple misadventure
One wrong turn, ride the wave

Looking for protection
No where to hide
Fortune intervenes
Takes me for a ride
Outside the Lines
