Night Owl
by Jed Moffitt

They are both whip smart, and they know how to cut deep
She has a freaky side, and a beautifully sinuous mind
She can come unhinged and justify weird things in her head
A backstory of blame, a knife from behind

She’s gonna leave me, and fly away to the strange
Obsessed with the dark, addicted to perpetual change
She’s gonna leave me for something ecstatic, and twisted, and new
Can I find a love that is a little bit more pragmatic, and a little less taboo

I’m scared, she went out yesterday, with some inscrutable hipster in a charcoal fedora
Said not to wait up, she won’t be coming back for a while
I stood there like a zombie, did not stand in her way as she walked out the door
I am giving inch by inch, and I am losing mile by mile

She’s gonna leave me, and fly away to the strange
Obsessed with the dark, addicted to perpetual change
She’s gonna leave me for something ecstatic, and twisted, and new
Can I find a love that is a little more gumdrops and sunshine, and a little less taboo

Instrumental bridge

These are wild eyed and crazy schemes
Bouncing through the heart of the dark on psychic trampolines
Inglorious collapses chasing fantasies of flight
Up all night

What happened to regular, what happened to plain
What if we read the morning paper over coffee and simulate sane
I don’t need a score of lovers, I don’t need a dungeon play
Just a warm friend in the morning to help me keep the demons away

She’s gonna leave me, I would stop her, but I don’t have the stones
My heart feels like a crypt painted white, but harboring a dead man’s bones
She’s gonna leave me, why do I still love her like I do
Can I find a love with a little more sangria and summer rain, and a little less taboo
