Football Trick
by Jed Moffitt

We all watched the specials when we were kids and they were the best thing on TV. I remember reading my first Peanuts cartoon in the waiting room of the Orthodontist when I was getting braces. I was 10 years old. We saw Charlie Brown line up (again) for the kick, and Lucy Van Pelt teeing it up, promising that this time it would be different. Charlie Brown makes the run and kicks with all his might, Lucy yanks the ball away, and Charlie ends up flat on his back. What is it about the seduction of a beautiful smile and curly black hair that mesmerizes us to the point that we are willing to overlook failure time after time in the face of the impossible odds…and just try it again, and again, and again. The allure of a beautiful woman is strong. Am I right? Stan and I have always agreed. There are two good reasons to play music. The first is for the music. The second…for the women, of course!

Here, we are again
4th and long, game is on the line…
Glory, is in my hands
with my friend, who I can depend on

Now, the whistle blows
the ball is snapped,
and I am trapped in a bad dream

Hey, Charlie Brown, kick it one more time
This time I’ll hold it straight and true
What goes around comes back again
It’s the game we’ll be playing in the end

Why, eve-ry time,
do you smile, and say its different
Black curls, in your hair
make me stare, I become stupid

They say, insanity
just repeats
the same thing over and over

Hey, Charlie Brown, kick it one more time
This time I’ll hold it straight and true
What goes around comes back again
It’s the game we’ll be playing in the end

Time, loops and spins
Cycling sins, and forgiveness
Still you have faith, that she will place
it on the tee

The play,
Is the same,
But the game, stakes get higher and higher

Hey, Charlie Brown, kick it one more time
This time I’ll hold it straight and true
What goes around comes back again
It’s the game we’ll be playing in the end
